Name: French Voyagers & Minnesota's Fur Trade
Date: March 11, 2024
Event Description:
The Pipestone County Historical Society, Meinders Community Library, and the Pipestone Area Middle/High School library invite the public to a collaborative event made possible through a Better Together grant awarded by Prairielands Library Exchange.

This presentation, by Minnesota educator and historian Arn Kind on the Fur Trade Experience, will be held at the Pipestone Area Schools Auditorium on Monday, March 11th beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Kind has been an educator for 38 years, both in the classroom, teaching grades 4 through 12 and through his presentations to young people and adults of all ages.

This Fur Trade Experience presentation will guide the audience to understand how the French Voyageurs were among the first Europeans to explore and make maps of what would become Minnesota. Guests will meet Black Jacque Shalaque, an authentically costumed voyageur who makes Minnesota’s colorful fur trade come to life. Through his colorful portrayal of a voyageur, Mr. Kind will have you up and involved through hands-on interactive living history activities where you will role-play the parts of voyageurs and the proud indigenous people of Minnesota as you trade furs for trade goods and then simulate the paddling of a 35 foot Montreal canoe.
